The Blue Badge scheme helps people with visible and non-visible conditions to park closer to their destination.

What is a Blue Badge?

A Blue Badge allows you to park closer to your destination if you have a visible or non-visible condition that affects your mobility. It gives you access to designated parking spaces and other parking concessions.

Benefits include:

  • Park in disabled parking bays
  • Free parking in pay-and-display bays (check local rules)
  • Valid throughout the UK and in many European countries

Who Can Apply?

You may be eligible for a Blue Badge if you:

Automatically Qualify:

  • Receive the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP) with 8 points or more for moving around
  • Are registered blind
  • Receive a War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
  • Have received a lump sum payment from the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme

May Qualify Based on Assessment:

  • Cannot walk or find walking very difficult
  • Have a severe disability in both arms and cannot operate parking meters
  • Have a child under 3 with a medical condition requiring bulky medical equipment
  • Have a permanent and substantial disability affecting your ability to walk

The Application Process

Applications are submitted to your local council. Processing times vary, but typically take 4-6 weeks.

Receive Your Badge

If approved, your Blue Badge will be valid for 3 years. We can help you with renewal applications too.

Important Information

Cost:

Blue Badges cost up to £10 in England (free in Scotland and Wales). Some councils may charge less or offer free badges.

Elders with Roots charges £60 for form filling assistance.

Validity:

Badges are valid for 3 years and must be renewed before expiry. We can help with renewal applications.

Usage:

The badge can only be used when the badge holder is traveling as a driver or passenger. Misuse is a criminal offense.
